I have not blogged for nearly a week –
for no particular reason – I just did not feel like blogging and had nothing
particular to say.
I don’t talk about religion much any
more because it is a pointless exercise - but PK brought this
to my attention.
I find it fascinating – as I do all
requests for intervention from God by sports people and teams – because if they
are asking God to help them win – by definition they must be asking God to make
the other person or team lose.
This does not strike me as being very
Christian - and I have never seen a satisfactory explanation for it.
Sure I pray that I will be able beat
Lenny at chess – but I also pray for him – just not quite as much. Lately we
have been neck and neck so I might cut down the amount of prayer going his way.
But in the instance of the Texas school
– there is really nothing surprising about this at all.
There are regular battles within the
Texas Board of Education to try to get Creationism taught in schools (Rick
Perry thinks it already is).
Texas is also where the Republican
Party platform states:
“Knowledge-Based
Education – We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)
(values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are
simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which
focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the
student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.”
I am not making this up. The Washington Post
article is here.
People like me have little to fear from
religion – but I worry a lot about the ignorant nutters in political parties
who have the power to subvert education because of their own crazy beliefs.
We had our first snow here yesterday. I did
not get a photo so have given you one of Stadtpark in Spring. (Spot the Ducks).
The 13th Congressional district of Texas that I live in is tied for the highest Republican index of R+29 using the Cook Partisan Voting Index, but I think my city may be even higher.
ReplyDeleteMy being a Christian has not kept me from wondering why anyone thinks God really cares about specific football games.
ReplyDeleteYou must get winter photos, all of followers are looking forward to something than our own front windows.
He intervenes because the opposing team is part of the 47%. They matter less.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the Washington Post article, and have sent the link to all my science teacher colleagues.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to take a successful duck photo. How does one get them to sit still? I guess a zoom lens would help... sigh.
LOL so very true !
ReplyDeleteHave the best day !
Me
esb: I will expect no critical thinking from you.
